Timewaster

Boy, fiddling with the layout is a time-waster. I’ve just spent hours cleaning up my side column to make it a little more usable, descriptive and fun. I have badges for a bunch of the blog’s features, they’re finally arranged semi-neatly and nearly all of them have rollover text.

You’ll see my various RSS feeds now listed (the ATOM feed will be of interest to folks who want full entries when they subscribe to my blog).

My point is, it takes a lot longer than it seems it should. Finding and/or creating the buttons I need, uploading them, editing the template (repeatedly) rebuilding… Wow. The hours fly by.

For those at all interested in syndicated content, I’ve been using Bloglines lately to read my favorite weblogs. If you want to get an idea of what this looks like, I’ve made my list of blogs public at Bloglines, and you can get to it through this button:
wherever you see it on the page.

Feel free to take any buttons here for your own use. I’ve created some of them, and the rest are freely distributed elsewhere. So have at it.

Wow, look at all those badges! Knowing where you stand on everything almost rules out the need for a conversation! :-)

Bloglines is good, thanks for reminding me of it. FYI, I get the feeling that full entries with HTML enabled are preferred in RSS feeds over excerpts. I'm still one of those old fashioned folk who prefer visiting the actual website over a feed so I don't have a strong preference.

Badges? We don't need no steenking badges!

(I had to say it before someone else did)

You're right - I ought to enable full entries on all my feeds. I prefer it that way as well.

When I use Bloglines, I use it to see "what's new" on all my favorite blogs. More often than not, I end up visiting the person's weblog page anyway. But it's a good way for me to organize (and share) my favorites. (You can choose which folders ot make public).

My current difficulty is whether to use Furl or del.icio.us. I really like hte simplicity of del.icio.us. I may be switching my "quick links" to use that.

I'm not sure which one came first. But del.icio.us seems to be the better designed of the two. The mailing lists on the site are interesting to see how the creator wants to keep the interface as uncluttered and functional as possible while still adding a few new features. And it is damn easy to use.

It's a good philosopy.

Speaking of mail lists, have you ever used the Bloglines email channels? You can turn a mail list into an RSS feed (basically).

I haven't tried it yet, but it sounds really nifty. Reduce some of the clutter in my inbox.

Hey, that e-mail channel feature is handy. It was easy to create an e-mail address and use it to subscribe to the del.icio.us mailing list. Thanks.

Now that you've used it, I should give it a try myself. :)

I must steal your Red Sox badge...

I slave and slave to make my site look pretty, and you go and use an aggregator, negating my meticulous CSS?!

Interestingly, I started making buttons yesterday for each of my categories, which I was going to use similarly to your badge collection. Then I got bored, though, and only made a couple.

Does html work in here? Apparently.

Sox button, Prov Button, RI Button

I like your buttons.

Yeah, I use an aggregator. Because EVERYONE ELSE'S SITE LAYOUT suX0rs!

Seriously, though, I mostly just use Bloglines to keep track of who has updated.

Besides, your sparkling intellect is the real draw anyhow. (James quietly escapes while Bil is basking in the flattery)

Ok, now I have to steal Bil's Red Sox button...

Just a quick note: Go ahead and take Inkstink Musings off of your Blogroll when you have a moment. As can be seen, I haven't updated it in ages and the site is due to quietly expire in a few more days.

Thanks for linking to it, though. I appreciate it! I'll be returning with a new blog soon ...

You got it. Let me know when you get another weblog going.
