Burning Hand Relief

If you’re grilling out in the back yard and you grab a hot hamburger turner (you know, one of those wire cages you can put a few burgers in) it will burn nice lines into your hand across your thumb and forefinger.

And you get to relive the experience every time you pick something up.

HOWEVER, your burns will be located in such a way that grasping a bottle of chilled beer, cider or other alcoholic beverage brings all the welts into contact with the cool bottle. This provides relief until either:

  1. The bottle warms up, or
  2. You drink the contents of the bottle, causing the bottle to warm up that much quicker.

If you consume the contents of the bottle, or the bottle simply warms up, another chilled bottle must be retrieved to stave off the pain. This process can be repeated as necessary. However, if you are consuming the beverages, you will reach a point where you are no longer concerned about the temperature of the bottles.

By the way - the "treated" burns are faring much better than the untreated burns on my other hand.

I'd always heard you should hold a burn under cold water to reduce the severity, but I thought it only numbed the pain temporarily. I can say with confidence that it also helps the burn in the long run. I have flat burn lines on my hand instead of welts or blisters, and they don't look bad at all. Meanwhile, on the other hand the lesser burn looks red and angry, and still hurts.

So take my advice. If you get burned cooking, cool it down for an hour or so. Don't ice it; you'll reduce the cuirculaiton too much. Just cool it down. The bottles worked for me. But cold water will do it too. Maybe just a little ice in the water.

You'll thank me later.
