Pre-empt Moore

It’s not up on www.TrimShrub.com yet, but I had this idea for a banner this morning…

How many people wish they could go back in time and stop Michael Moore from writing his last couple of books or making Fahrenheit 9/11? Well, there are no time machines, but to prevent having the same feeling around 2006 or 2007, they can act in November.

I'd be incredibly disappointed if Moore didn't continue to do his thing just because a Democrat is in office.

The thing about Moore is that he is much more consistent than most conservative pundits who won't ever say anything bad about a Republican. Guys like Michael Moore and Tom Tomorrow (and Jim Hightower and Molly Ivins and Howard Zinn, etc) did not sit by quietly as Clinton bombed foreign countries and destroyed American factory-towns. And they won't be silenced if Kerry does the same.

Meanwhile, you never hear all the people who were complaining about "big government" and "jack booted thugs" under Janet Reno ever say anything bad about Ashcroft and the USA PATRIOT act.

That being said, its a funny idea for a banner - though I would try to tighten up the wording... like "STOP MICHAEL MOORE BEFORE HE WRITES AGAIN!"

Don't forget Ted Rall (www.tedrall.com). He's an equal-opportunity skewerer (is that a word?).

Dave, you're absolutely right about the silence of the loudest complainers against Reno. Big government couldn't get any bigger than it is now.

How I yearn for the days when the government was interested only in what kind of sex I was having...

I expect Moore will continue to work. This banner isn't really a prediction, it's just meant to spur discussion. Of course, Bush has provided so much fodder that Moore's star has experiences a meteoric rise (to mix metaphors). Moore will still write, but his subsequent books may not be as sought after without Bush in the White House.

Bowling For Columbine was critical of Clinton, and Moore did quite a bit of work during Clinton's administration. We've only just heard Fox-style bashing and outrage over Moore since his comments at the Oscars about Bush's elective war.

There are a number of ways to look at this.

Bush is creating fodder for Moore. If you vote for Bush, and he continues his lousy service to this country, you can expect more from Moore and others who won't go quietly. Bush is extreme. Choose extreme for your president and you're going to get friction.

I chose "preempt" because I thought it was catchy and ironic. I don't mind at all if people steal this particular idea and make their own improved banner.

Perhaps without Bush in office, Moore will be free to return to corporate greed.

"Downsize This!" is still my favorite Moore book - a product of the Clinton years. :-)

The poor guy. It's just like listening to Lewis Black's rants from 2000 and 1998. He sounded really mad back during the Clinton years, but he had NO idea what was coming.
