Ego Surfing Shotgun

Another week, another few links.

  • DisturbingAuctions.com (Odd)
    • It’s a website that collects links to auctions that are a litte bit… off. The image on this post is from an Armour Hot Dog Promotional Sign.
    • “There’s something just too smug about this boy. It’s just a hot dog, junior. What kinds of kids like Armour hot dogs? Smarmy ones, evidently.”
  • You Are An Idiot (Noisy Flash Animation)
    • Brief. To the point. Loud. Repetitive. Don’t click this link unless your speakers are turned down low. I imagine its main use is for forwarding to people who have fallen out of favor. However, I find that as I am leaving running in the background I feel strangely… idiotic.
  • Google Maps! (Geography)
    • If you like maps and haven’t seen Google Maps yet, you ought to check it out! They’ve made internet mapping much more interactive. Google marches on.
  • Cat Dancing (Freakish Animation)
    • Mildly diverting portion of cat-obsessed strangeness.
  • Napoleon Dynamite Soundboard (Movies, Sound)
    • Now you can hear “Pedro offers you his protection” as many times as you want. Gosh!
    • “Grandma just called and said you’re supposed to go home. She said she doesn’t want you here when she gets back because you’ve been ruining everybody’s lives and eating all our steak.”
  • Dynamite! (Nostalgia)
    • Remember “Dynamite!” magazine? Holy cow. Look! It’s Logan’s Run! And Bummers. And Farrah!
  • Earth Erotica (Photos)
    • Pictures of a geological nature that suggest subjects of an erotic nature. “Rock hard” takes on a new relevance.
  • Free Webhosting at x10 (Tools)
    • Get free webhosting for a blog, a database, a website… whatever. The catch is, you must place their ads on your pages. I haven’t tried them, but it sounds like a good deal for someone who just wants to play around for free. Or perhaps host a bunch of images, thoug there are easier ways to get free image hosting.
  • Harmless Windows Pranks (Techie Fun)
    • It’s a collection of apps you can use to mess up someone else’s computer in a harmless way for some good, clean fun. I’d never (never, I say!) use these because I don’t want to get involved in tampering with someone else’s system, but they are fun to browse.
  • Asterix (Comix)
    • It’s the virtual village of Asterix, everyone’s favorite Gaul.
  • PRESSblog::Blog Marketability (Me)
    • Local marketing blog awards Aces Full of Links with a 2 out of 5 for marketing potential. There is no truth to the rumors that a well-placed bribe allowed me to double my score. None at all. I have no idea where this fellow got the idea that I am left leaning. Everyone knows I am solidly centrist. Ask BriWei if you don’t believe me.
  • Sinister Ducks (Animation)
    • A reason to worry about ducks. These ducks have gone bad!
  • Autism Spectrum Quiz (Quiz)
    • Answer these questions and screen yourself. I came out above 30. The quiz is vague on what the score means.
    • “Eighty percent of those diagnosed with autism or a related disorder scored 32 or higher. The test is not a means for making a diagnosis, however, and many who score above 32 and even meet the diagnostic criteria for mild autism or Asperger’s report no difficulty functioning in their everyday lives.”

That’s it. I’m spent.

Note: my norton antivirus claims there is a trojan horse embedded in the "You Are An Idiot" page. This may or may not be true but click at your own risk.

Congrats on your PRESSblog rating btw!

I scored 34 on the AQ test, btw.

As one of your "loyal group of posters," I was interested to find that I am one of the "younger, plugged-in people." Even though I'm 37.

I feel so LA! Wow, those fabulous new sunglasses I got really worked some magic!

I just loved loved loved the cat dancing, and I shared that with others in my place of employ.

Hey, I scored a 14 on the AQ.

I learned my lesson with IE last week. Norton doesn't seem to stop the worst stuff.

Friends don't let friends use Internet Explorer.

Wow, Dynamite! I always wanted to subscribe, but I was never allowed.

He's selling those on Ebay? And people are bidding? Shit, Bob, take pictures of some of your old Dragon mags and get on Ebay, man!

I scored a 19 on the AQ test, but the thing about having asperger's and autism is that you might not be aware enough about yourself to answer some of those questions honestly. Granted, K is only 9, but she would probably answer "no" to questions that should get a resounding "yes!!! all the time!!!" I've had to explain to her that not everybody enjoys hearing lists, most people find them boring, but I don't think she even knows when she's doing it.

Dragon magazines don't seem to be going for a lot on ebay... I've got a bunch I've been thinking of selling :P

I got an AQ score of 29. Significance unknown.

I think a lower score is less autistic.

I think it's supposed to frustrate people whop are detail-oriented. :-D

Posted by: James at February 11, 2005 5:21 PM

I only pulled a 16 on the quiz. So, I MUST be autistic and can't realize how I was supposed to answer. :)

K did the quiz and she got 21. Now granted, it's an adult quiz, and granted, she's a highly functional asperger's. But one of the main differences between people on the pdd spectrum and more typical people is that they don't pick up on social information. If someone isn't picking up on cues of facial expression and body language, then they're not "reading between the lines" while that person is talking and they're not picking up that the person is bored, and they don't know that they're not picking this up, because that is non-information to them. They may really love parties and think they're great conversationalists. They may yack away on the phone, not realizing that turn-taking is even involved. So that is where I see the questionnaire as flawed. I think the more PDD a person is, the less likely they're going to score high, because they are not even aware that these social cues exist.

I'm not criticizing it, it was fun and it's not a diagnostic tool. But I think it may be more illuminating for the person watching over your shoulder as you answer then it is for you, and the score may not reflect your actual PDD-ness.

And Chuck, while you love to catalog ad infinitum, I don't think you're at all PDD. Weird score.
