Forget the Ax

Axes are so 19th century in Fall River. Today’s weapon of choice: the machete.

After making two arrests in connection with Sunday’s gang-related machete attack, police are scouring the city for a third suspect, who may be on the run.

The machete has worlwide appeal. Would you expect this in Edinburgh? I wouldn't, but apparently I should.

Six knifed in Capital over bloody weekend

"The attacks included a mother-of-two stabbing a stranger, a teenager being attacked with a machete and a man being stabbed for money."

Eep!

My favorite was when the local "eyewitness news" (brought to you by the only two stations that come in on my tv) tried to say that this gang had ties to Al Queida, with absolutely no evidence whatsoever. Serious, the speculation was something like, "They have guns. Al Queida uses guns. Therefore they're probably linked."

A perfect example of why I try to limit my exposure to local news.

I should say, local TV news.

It's not just knives, and it's not just Edinburgh! From today's Boston Globe:

Attacker with ax kills man on busy street
http://www.boston.com/news/world/asia/articles/2005/03/15/police_kill_22_inmates_in_raid_to_retake_prison/

"LONDON -- An attacker used an ax to kill a man on a busy street in the Regent's Park section of London yesterday morning, as horrified onlookers screamed at him to stop. The 61-year-old victim, whom police did not identify, died of severe head injuries. The 37-year-old suspect did not resist arrest. Police suspect the attack was not random but had no theory on motive. (AP)"
