Instructions: see the clues, one by one. Guess what movie they are from. Comment. Repeat.
On the day I post the images, I post them one at a time, with a delay in between. It’s for suspense and it gives the users a chance to play along with each other in the comments. If all the clues are already posted, then play at your own pace. Look for the answer in the comments.

The game begins!
Posted by: James at April 26, 2005 3:35 AMPlease tell me your time stamp is off and you didn't really post this at 2:08 A.M.
Posted by: Patti M. at April 26, 2005 8:06 AMFamiliar, but not enough. Looks like it might be a Raider/Indy style movie but not one of the three Jones. You already did Romancing the Stone or Jewel of the Nile (I forget which). One of the Mummys?
Posted by: B.O.B.(bob) at April 26, 2005 8:13 AMYou know, when I saw what could be an older gun and what could be a map, my mind went directly to "Raiders," but I was unwilling to commit.
Hmm...
Posted by: Patti M. at April 26, 2005 8:20 AMOld revolver, rolled up document, and some sort of log... list of names looks like.
Hmmm. Dunno.
Looks familiar... need more pix.
This looks like more of a crime thing than an adventure thing. I need more pictures.
Posted by: Julie at April 26, 2005 9:19 AMSorry for the delay on posting clue 2. It was unavoidable. :(
Posted by: James at April 26, 2005 10:34 AMSilence of the Lambs
Posted by: Chuck S. at April 26, 2005 10:48 AMPlaces in the Heart?
Posted by: Mike at April 26, 2005 10:57 AMLate '50s, early '60s. Still no idea of the movie.
Posted by: Patti M. at April 26, 2005 11:10 AMKinda doubt that I've seen this.
Posted by: Julie at April 26, 2005 11:21 AMlooks familiar but no guesses. Obviously wrong on the adventure film track.
Posted by: B.O.B.(bob) at April 26, 2005 11:44 AMOkay, it's definitely Silence of the Lambs. Pic 2 is from a flashback to Clarice Starling's childhood before her father passed away. Pic 3 is the elevator in the building where Dr. Lecter is being temporarily incarcerated, and where he escapes from by disguising himself as an injured police officer.
I can't exactly place scene 1. I assume Clarice is reviewing some evidence or other in this scene.
Posted by: Chuck S. at April 26, 2005 11:54 AMWow! That's a lot of detail! Even if it's not "Silence of the Lambs," Chuck should get a special mention for being able to recall specific details of a movie.
Posted by: Patti M. at April 26, 2005 12:12 PMI don't remember any of these scenes from Silence of the Lambs, not that that proves anything. :)
Posted by: Julie at April 26, 2005 12:33 PMYeah I'm sticking with SotL. I'm going to say pic 4 is from the autopsy of the dead girl, this is the goo they smear beneath their nostrils to kill the stench of decay.
Posted by: Chuck S. at April 26, 2005 12:47 PMpic 5, the lady Senator, the mother of the girl kidnapped early in the movie.
Posted by: Chuck S. at April 26, 2005 2:00 PMNever saw it, unfortunately, but Chuck seems pretty certain.
Posted by: briwei at April 26, 2005 2:30 PMI think Chuck might be right. :)
Posted by: Julie at April 26, 2005 2:37 PMYou never saw Silence of the Lambs??? How'd that happen? Go rent it (just don't watch with the kids!). Chuck is right image 6 confirmed it for me. I remembered the autopsy scence also once I read Chuck's comments.
Pic 6, Dr. Lecter in disguise and in pursuit of the doctor who presided over his imprisonment.
"The world is far more interesting with you in it, Clarice. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to have an old friend for dinner."
Posted by: Chuck S. at April 26, 2005 3:00 PMYou know, I should have gotten this on image 1. I remember seeing that scene from the movie and thinking it was weird that the bullets have little dimples on top.
Oh well. Image 2 was still pretty good.
Img 7 is the dressmaker's dummy from which Clarice begins to get the idea that the killer is making himself a suit of skin from his victims.
LECTER: "First principles, Clarice. Read Marcus Aurelius. Of each particular thing ask 'What is it in itself? What is its nature?' What does he do, this man you seek?"
STARLING: "He kills women."
LECTER: "No. That is incidental. What is the first and principal thing he does? What needs does he serve by killing?"
STARLING: "Anger, social acceptance, sexual frustration."
LECTER: "NO! He covets. That's his nature. And how do we begin to covet, Clarice? Do we seek out things to covet? Make an effort to answer."
STARLING: "No. We-"
LECTER: "No. Precisely. We begin by coveting what we see every day..."
Kind of silly to hold anything back now, with Chuck's detailed answers. I will reveal the rest of the images and congratulate Chuck on getting this week's NTM!!!
The first image is when she is surrendering her gun to go in to visit Lecter. The papers are his drawings. The list is the list of visitors.
I knew it would be tough to get this one by Chuck -- he's a big fan of Jodie Foster. And getting it on image #2 *IS* good - these were tough images. But I'm a little glad no one got it on the first. :)
Anyone who hasn't seen this movie: PUT IT ON YOUR MUST SEE LIST. As B.O.B. says "Go rent it." It's one of the best films and definitely the best serial killer genre film.
Don't make me go over there!

This movie is on AMC, Friday night at 10:15.
Posted by: Julie at April 27, 2005 2:01 PMSee, Brian. You don't even have to rent it! Let the kids stay up, pop some popcorn and make a family night out of it!
(KIDDING)
Posted by: James at April 27, 2005 2:51 PMThe question is, does AMC run uncut, unedited movies.
Posted by: briwei at April 27, 2005 5:48 PMEven if it's edited, the subject matter isn't suitable for children.
Posted by: James at April 27, 2005 6:54 PMNo, AMC doesn't, or at least not this movie. But if the question is "will this be just like seeing the real movie or will they butcher it beyond recognition so I might as well rent it anyway," I'm not sure how to answer. If nothing less than the pure, uncut, unedited product will do, then obviously you must rent it. But I have seen it on TV and don't feel that the edits took much away from the creepy brilliance of the film. Still, if it is just as cheap and convenient for you to rent, it's surely more enjoyable that way. I watch movies on TV because I am too lazy to rent.
Posted by: Julie at April 27, 2005 7:36 PMJust FYI, I have an NTM up on my blog. For anybody who hasn't had enough yet! I'm doing it James-style, one image per time unit. Also, I have a "recent posts" hack on my blog now.
Posted by: Maggie at April 27, 2005 7:50 PMI hate watching movies for the first time on TV, though. The commercial breaks are jarring. TV shows are built around them, but feature films are not.
It;s different if you've already seen the film. The commercials bother me less.
But I have seen SotL on broadcast TV and it was pretty good, even edited. But you lose something. The clever broadcase I saw a couple of months ago moved the widescreen movie content to the top of the screen and filled the bottom of the screen with facts and trivia about the making of the film. It was actually quite interesting. I don't remember if it was on AMC.
I'd like ot see this treatment for other acclaimed movies. It was like a commentary track, but easier to ignore when you wanted to. And a hell of a lot more interesting and informative than most commentaries.

I think I may start doing my NTMs in James' format too, it encourages more commentary I think. Welcome to the game Maggie!
Posted by: Chuck S. at April 27, 2005 8:47 PMThat was probably AMC. They do that, but not on Friday nights.
Posted by: Julie at April 28, 2005 9:21 AMRight. I would never let the kids watch it. I meant for me. I'll most likely rent it as I want to see it the way it was done originally.
Posted by: briwei at April 28, 2005 11:16 AMHi, just found this blog via Grow-a-Brain -- looks like fun! ONE PROBLEM: As soon as the page loaded, I saw a Google ad at the top that said "Silence of the Lambs"! Phooey. I'll have to join in sooner, before Google starts reading all the comments. ;-)
Posted by: Karen at May 18, 2005 6:45 AMDarn, you're right! I guess the ad engine is scanning the comments as well.
Well, it means you'll just have to show up on Tuesdays and play along with the gang.
Posted by: James at May 18, 2005 9:40 AMGeeze,
I hadn't even noticed there were ads up there.
Posted by: B.O.B.(bob) at May 18, 2005 9:56 AMI put them on the individual archive pages rather than the front page so that the regulars are less likely to be annoyed by them.
People coming in from google searches are the ones that see them and hit 'em.
You know, the deluge of folks interested in reading a bunch of reasons against gay marriage (even if they don't realize that the article was satire). That lot.
Posted by: James at May 18, 2005 10:09 AMJames, one possible solution to fool the google ads, is to insist that people enter the movie name backwards, and you also type it backwards for the reveal.
I doubt the google ads are smart enough to make the connection between "sbmaL eht fo ecneliS" and this movie. Then again maybe that wouldn't help with the quotes, actors names, and etc.
