Musical Meanings Monday

Ok. Today we delve into the meaning of a song by a popular group “The Killers.”

What’s going on with this song? You decide.

Somebody Told Me (excerpt) - The Killers
Breaking my back just to know your name
Seventeen tracks and I’ve had it with this game
I’m breaking my back just to know your name
But heaven ain’t close in a place like this
Anything goes but don’t blink, you might miss
‘Cause heaven ain’t close in a place like this
I said heaven ain’t close in a place like this
Bring it back down, bring it back down tonight
Never thought I’d let a rumour ruin my moonlight

Never heard of the band or the song. Got an mp3 of it before I attempt an anlysis?

My take on this song:

He's tryign to pick some girl up. He can barely get to talk to her, just finding out her name is hard work. They're in a club.

He's making up any excuse to talk to her, including this silly out-on-a-limb association with her supposed ex-boyfriend.

Perhaps he's saying that they have similar tastes, and that's why they should hook up. I have no clue why he would say "never thought I'd let a rumor ruin my moonlight."

I've gotten really into this song, in fact it is track number 2 on my Rock Out CD. I would agree with the idea that they are at a club and he is trying to pick up a girl. Perhaps there is some ecstasy involved, not sure.

I still like my theory that he is either bisexual (it's not confidential), or has just discovered that his ex-girlfriend is a guy (never thought I'd let a rumor ruin my moonlight). I just can't work either idea into the rest of the song, which does seem to be a guy at a club.

By the way, google ads' theory is:
Get a boyfriend/Get your boyfriend back/wanna new boyfriend?

So see, he's definitely gay.

Never really thought too deep about the meaning, but the pickup theme, bisexual overtones and desperation to "get saddled" are all readily apparent - I just love the song, it really works in the gym, but my favorite piece of theirs is Mr. Brightside. Both get heavy play on my I-Pod. They're self-admittedly (though you don't need the admission, it's so apparent; especially if you hear "Smile Like You Mean It") very heavily influenced by The Cure, a band whose first 10 CD's I still have in my collection though I can't remember when I last listened to one. Maybe I'll put on some lipstick and guy-liner, tease my bald spot, dig up "Pornography" and rip it to my I-Pod...

I like "Mr. Brightside" as well.

I swear if you listen hard enough, you can hear a flock of seagulls flapping their wings, as well. Maybe just a little bit.

And I can't get through this comment without mentioning Fn Boy Three's rendition of "Our Lips Are Sealed." Has nothing to do with The Killers, but I just felt compelled.

Dude...I think I still actually have "The Best of Fun Boy Three" on CD. Not really sure what it's the "best of", but "Our Lips Are Sealed" is on it. As far as Flock of Seagulls, you have an interesting look-alike pic coming your way soon.

I think hes at a club tryin' to hook up with a girl. He's obviously afraid to talk to her so he probably talks to one of her friends who tells him she might have a boy friend. That rumor is ruining his night ( never thought id let a rumor ruin my moonlight) he plans on leaving because he doesnt want to keep tryin to talk to her any more. Thats what I think.

this may sounda little paranoid or gossip loving, but alot of his songs have some bisexual tones to it. especially "andy you're a star", and as for "somebody told me" who says its a girl hes talking about? the person hes talking about could very well be a guy who had a feminine boyfriend. in "andy you're a star" it says promise me shes not you're world, he also talks about calling him and hes a star in only his eyes. also in "on top" its saying he finally found the velvet sun between me and you. in "mr. brightside" hes talking about coming out of his cage so he could jsut as well be talking about the guy with the girl instead of the girl with the guy. and it starting out with a kiss could possibly be the first time he kissed a guy and realized hes bisexual. lol maybe im reading just a bit too far into this but i think hes bisexual.

It's possible. He never does actually mention that he's talking to/about a girl.
