Hrmm...

A red blob through some trees and across a body of water, reflecting on the water and the wet road in front. Funky looking tree/bush on left there. Some reflectors, a speed limit sign, a road terrain sign facing away. A small sign, or thing... mailbox maybe? With some glowing blobs over it? Little green grass in the foreground.

Ack! This picture is so small!

Could that mailbox looking thing be a parked jeep or car? Or a boat on the water? The red thing reminds me of a flare. Are they launching flares?

I have no idea. Mississippi Burning? Swamp Thing?

I'm clueless on this one. Need more pix.

"Red blob"? I think that's a light being held by a person. Don't you see a person? In fact I think I see two people. But it's really hard to tell.

Posted by: Julie at June 28, 2005 9:11 AM

It's 400 pixels wide. Quichabichen.

Posted by: James at June 28, 2005 9:16 AM

#2 looks like a wet Polaroid photo. Doesn't help me. :(

Posted by: Julie at June 28, 2005 10:42 AM

for some reason, these shots are making me think of that al pacino/colin farrell movie from a couple years back. i think it is called The Recruit or something like that.

Posted by: jeremy at June 28, 2005 10:46 AM

Does image #2 provide a clue as to why a mysterious red "blob" might be seen on a road. With traffic signs?

Posted by: James at June 28, 2005 10:49 AM

Hey, James, relax. Chuck's probably just never heard this song. Er, movie.

Posted by: Maggie at June 28, 2005 11:37 AM

I can't say for sure any of you have seen this movie, because I've never watched it with any of you, including Maggie.

I guess that's a hint, of a sort. But not a very good one.

What's this third image? Not a traffic light (i.e. red blob) nor a stop sign. But it's something.

I promist that the images get a *little* easier as they go. But not much. Easier than Chuck's last images. You should be able to tell whether you've seen the movie soon. Chuck will know for certain by #5 whether he's seen the movie or not, I imagine.

But, I admit, this is a toughie. Extra kudos to whomever gets it before the last.

Posted by: James at June 28, 2005 11:45 AM

#3 could be some kind of timer. I can't think of any other reason you'd want repeating increments of 60.

Posted by: Julie at June 28, 2005 12:02 PM

Hey, an old truck! Still no clue, so I'll shoot in the dark. October Sky?

Posted by: Bob McCown at June 28, 2005 12:30 PM

Time for my favorite NTM quote. "I got nuthin'" :)I have to say, the light in image 1 looks to be hanging too low to be a traffic light. If you say it is one, I believe you, but I wouldn't have gotten that from the image.

Posted by: briwei at June 28, 2005 12:35 PM

Image #2: creepy guy through rainsoaked glass and stop sign. Driving by? Another road image? Lot of travel in this movie. No idea what it is though.

Image #3: a knob where the numbers go up in increments of 12 to 60 and then start over. Seconds? Degrees? Is this on the side of a camera or a ... ahhhh. I think I may know what this is. But I can't remember any lines from it, only that it starred a certain young actress for whom I have much admiration.

Now if it is the movie I think it is, image 1 certainly fits. I don't really recognize image 2 but it could fit as well.

Let's just peek at image 4. Yep that fits.

The closest I can come to a line from this movie, if it is what I think it is, would be:

"Well hello there little fella. Where are you headed?"

Time to check out the other comments!

Posted by: Chuck S. at June 28, 2005 1:01 PM

It does look too low to be a traffic light, unless there has been massive flooding. But I don't think it looks like a traffic light at all. It looks more like a light that is being held by a person.

I don't know what this is. It doesn't look familiar. I bet it's not even The Ten Commandments.

Posted by: Julie at June 28, 2005 1:12 PM

I imagien that by now, Chuck should know whether he's seen it or not. Chuck? You have a guess?

Posted by: James at June 28, 2005 1:14 PM

Wow I'm getting a little ribbing huh?

Feel free to make the images whatever size you like. In my opinion 167 pixels high is very small--when I make thumbnails, they're 150 pixels high. Whatever--I didn't mean to sound like I was complaining, I was just having trouble figuring out what the objects in the picture were.

Julie, I'm not sure there is a person standing there. The color is right for a person standing with a road flare, but it looks to me like there is a body of water just beyond the trees and the fire or flare is on the other side. I can't tell if that shape there is a person or a jpeg artefact.

I'm sorry if you felt the images from last weeks NTM were too hard. I thought they were just right. :-(

Posted by: Chuck S. at June 28, 2005 1:15 PM

Wow - my typing is for crap today.

OK - maybe it's not a traffic light. I'm not telling.

Posted by: James at June 28, 2005 1:16 PM

Maybe it is a traffic light, but it seems too pink. I do think there has been flooding, though. Otherwise the sign posts are too short in proportion to the size of the signs.

Posted by: Julie at June 28, 2005 1:21 PM

Image 5: Well now I am no longer sure about my original guess. The vehicle in image 5 and perhaps the one in image 4 set the time of the movie back too far. So much for my theory that the red light in image 1 was a burning car.

Back to square one I'm afraid.

I think I recognize the actress, which leads to an obvious guess for the movie, so I don't want to blurt it out. However if this is that movie, I haven't seen it. I'm not a big fan of this actress.

Posted by: Chuck S. at June 28, 2005 1:22 PM

Yeah... I have no idea what this is. I've been staring at the images for awhile now. And my initial guess is wrong I think, and now I'm not sure of my latest guess. Need more images I guess.

I'm not sure I've seen this. I haven't seen any scene I recognize thus far.

Posted by: Chuck S. at June 28, 2005 1:47 PM

I think image 1 is a road flare. That would mean that someone is holding it for it to be at that height. Supports Julie's people standing there theory. Doesn't look like a body of water to me. Looks like a dark, wet curvy road.

Add it all up and I still got nuthin'.

Posted by: briwei at June 28, 2005 2:05 PM

I'm sure I know the dude in picture no. 2. Maddening.

Posted by: at June 28, 2005 2:11 PM

That was me (loaner laptop w/no saved info)

Posted by: Patti M. at June 28, 2005 2:12 PM

The dude in picture no. 6 looks a little dead in the lip area. I don't recognize him, though.

Posted by: Julie at June 28, 2005 2:16 PM

Cool Hand Luke?

Posted by: Bob McCown at June 28, 2005 2:18 PM

Image #6: someone being strangled? About to receive mouth to mouth? Being forced to swallow something or spit something out?

Wasn't there a movie done recently about a flooding river? Could this be that?

Posted by: Chuck S. at June 28, 2005 2:18 PM

Sorry for the ribbing, Chuckie. It's all meant in fun. Who loves ya, baby?

Image 6 is up. Now we've gotten to an important scene in the film.

And image 1 isn't going to help you solve this one. I put it in there because I noticed a lot od "stop" imagery in this movie.

Um... Isn't the purpose of this particular blog post to guess the movie? :D

I have absolutely no idea on this movie. So I like reading guesses. Sometimes they help "jog me memory"

More info:

Bri sez: "Add it all up and I still got nuthin'."

"Sometimes nuthin is ..."

It will help if you can tell what's in image 3. If you've seen the film.

Posted by: James at June 28, 2005 2:24 PM

Well, of course there's the egg scene in Cool Hand Luke. I've never seen the movie, but I've seen that scene. I remember people walking him around, but image #6 doesn't look familiar. Seems like it's a possibility.

Posted by: Maggie at June 28, 2005 2:26 PM

That's the thing that's making me nuts. I think I know what that is in image 3, and the early clues made me think of a movie that the later images have strongly pushed me away from.

Unless that red thing is a burning jeep, which I think it isn't.

At the risk of dropping names, the blond with the washbucket looks like Darryl Hannah to me. But I don't think this is Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, or Splash, and so I'm not sure what it is.

But I don't remember any of these images.

They're like clues to a movie I might have seen, but I'm not recalling anything by looking at them, so instead I'm trying to pull together themes, elements, and ideas from them.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say I haven't seen this movie.

Posted by: Chuck S. at June 28, 2005 2:32 PM

AHA! James, are you intimating picture 6 is Tele "The Lollipop" Savalas?

No?

Oh. Ok.

Posted by: at June 28, 2005 2:38 PM

Tell me what the thing is in image 3!!

Posted by: Julie at June 28, 2005 2:40 PM

OK - the first 3 images have something in common. The red blob is for something. The red sign is for something. And the thing in image 3 is for something, and part of it is red, but you can't see much of it in the picture.

Posted by: James at June 28, 2005 2:42 PM

And BTW, if it is "Cool Hand Luke", I'll definitely not be able to guess it!

Posted by: Chuck S. at June 28, 2005 2:43 PM

it's definately Cool Hand Luke. I had no clue until image 5. Then I was certain. Bob M. What you should have said was that Chuck and James seem to have here is a failure to communicate.

Posted by: B.O.B.(bob) at June 28, 2005 2:48 PM

I was 99% sure with clue 5, but clue 6 did it for me. Definately in the middle of the egg scene where he's laying on his back, and gets fed another egg or two.

Posted by: Bob McCown at June 28, 2005 2:51 PM

So then the actress in image #5 would be... Joy Harmon?

Posted by: Chuck S. at June 28, 2005 2:52 PM

Are you familiar with Joy Harmon, Chuck?

Image seven is now the second image you're getting of a principal character in this film.

Posted by: James at June 28, 2005 3:13 PM

It is most definitly Cool Hand Luke, and I'm kicking myself for not seeing clue #5 earlier! That's "Lucille," all right!

Posted by: Karen at June 28, 2005 3:14 PM

At this point, I'm releasing the rest of the images (just one more) because we seem to have some people who are sure, and some people who haven't seen the movie.

What do you think, folks? Can anyone tell us what we're looking at in image 3?

Posted by: James at June 28, 2005 3:15 PM

I can't get #8 to load. But, having never seen the movie, I'm pretty sure it won't be helpful. As for thing in #3, I guess based on all of the egg talk, perhaps it could be an egg timer. ;)

Posted by: Julie at June 28, 2005 3:32 PM

#3 is the whole reason he's in jail!

Posted by: Bob McCown at June 28, 2005 3:34 PM

Oh, it's a parking meter!!

Posted by: Julie at June 28, 2005 3:34 PM

Link to image 8 doesn't work.

No I am not familiar with Joy Harmon, but I can see from IMDB that there aren't many women in this movie.

Never saw Cool Hand Luke, which explains why I found these images so confusing.

Image 3 I thought was a knob on a large telescope controlling the azimuth or whatever its called. I suppose it could also be on like a mortar or something.

Posted by: Chuck S. at June 28, 2005 3:35 PM

Looks like an airplane dial.

Posted by: Patti M. at June 28, 2005 3:35 PM

Oops - sorry about 8. Fixed.

This is, indeed Cool Hand Luke.

Sometimes, nuthin' can be a real cool hand.

In image 8 he's flashing that smile of his. Image 7 is his eyes in the picture he sent back to his buddies. Image 6 is him trying to chew up an egg. Image 5 is "Lucille" the actually nameless exhibitionist about to get the whole work crew's attention. Image 4 is the work crew truck you see throughout the film. Image 3 is a parking meter about to register "VIOLATION" as its head is cut off. Image 2 is the camera zooming in on a stop sign after the road crew finished its work early. The boss at the left is puzzled. Image one is the first of the three traffic/law-related signs containing red - it's a red traffic light after Luke is driven away.

Congrats to everyone who played. There is a lot to like about this film -- a character study of Luke himself.

Posted by: James at June 28, 2005 4:19 PM

Heh. Didn't check it until just now, but got it on the first image.

Which further confirms my theory that I get them in one image or don't get them at all.

Posted by: David Grenier at June 29, 2005 1:09 AM

I knew it wasn't because I decided the movie was older but I thought it looked like Darryl Hannah too.

I decided I didn't know the movie, I guess I've never seen Cool Hand Luke, I thought I had. Maybe that's why I got those questions wrong on the test in film appreciation class...
