Fresca Makeover

Fresca has gotten a makeover, and a couple of new flavor spinnoffs.

Yes, as always, Aces Full of Links is the place to go for cutting edge diet soft drink news.

The two new flavors are Sparkling Peach Citrus Fresca and Sparkling Black Cherry Fresca. Both are now available at the local supermarket here.

You can see the old can design in this image from the Coca Cola website. The new one is really retro-spacey. Frankly, a little generic looking. But the old design was no great shakes either, so I’m not complaining. I think it’s a slight improvement.

I’ve been drinking the Sparkling Peach Citrus Fresca for two days now. It’s more peach than citrus, but you can still taste the grapefruit Fresca flavor peeking through. It’s a very fresh balance, actually. I’m going to guess that people who like fruit-flavored drinks will like this a little bit more than the original Fresca. I like peach, so I think this is a definite improvement.

One thing is for certain, Sparkling Peach Citrus Fresca is head and shoulders above the abomination that is 7-Up Plus. It took me months to work through a 12 pack of that mix of soda water, apple juice vitamin C and Splenda. (Side note: 7-Up Plus comes in 2 new flavors. You know I will eventually have to try them.)

Julie has a theory about mixing sugar and Splenda, and in the case of 7-Up Plus I have to agree.

But back to Fresca; it doesn’t contain Splenda. And the peach is definitely a good thing. The real test will be for me to get cans of the stuff and try them at 1 in the morning with a box of pretzel sticks. Thumbs up from Aces Full of Links.

I’ll report on the Black Cherry version when I have a chance.

LEARN STUPID FACTS!!!

Did you know….?

  • LBJ’s favorite soda was Fresca?
  • 7-Up’s original version contained Lithium Citrate and was consumed as a mood stabilizer?

I wonder if the new Fresca will be good in my Pimms No. 1 Cup (currently, I am using Limonata).

Hmm...may have to try this tonight.

Sadly, I was just informed that my husband is not planning to go to the supermarket after work, thus, I shall have no Fresh 'n' New Fresca.

I can not go to the supermarket myself until I know the bigot from Nebraska--who was flogging the "I hate queers" petition this past weekend--is gone.

I fear that if I lay eyes on him again, I may go all Bilbo on his ass, and that's not the way I want to end my evening.

I'm drinking my Fresca out of an empty Limonata can. Sharon introduced me to Limonata (which I love, but that's going to have to be its own post) and Sara gave me a can of the stuff yesterday. It was the only thing on my desk clean enough to drink Fresca out of.

Anyhow, funny coincidence that you should mention Limonata.

I've never had Pimms but it sounds good.

Fresca itself has been reformulated I believe and tastes more like it did in the days of saccharine (which is a good thing). I've always liked Fresca but they made it too sweet with the aspartame. i think the new version kicks back on the sweentness and adds back some of the grapefruit which is a big plus. I thought they did add some splenda too but maybe I read the can wrong (or maybe they didn't add it to the peach which I haven't tried).

So, James, any news on a new "New Tab"?
Or am I starting an unfounded rumor? And, really, isn't that what the Internet is for?
...mmmm...Pimm's...

Posted by: ThirdMate at October 5, 2005 5:14 PM

Ooh, I eagerly await your review of the black cherry version. Me, I'm not one to want my peaches in anything carbonated.

Posted by: Karen at October 5, 2005 6:18 PM

New Tab? Are you messin' with me, ThirdMate??

I look forward to trying peachy Fresca.

I had a 7-Up Plus today (berry), and although I think I'd like it better with a little something in it, I thought it was pretty good. I don't know if I'd buy it, but I'd more likely buy it than, say, Pepsi.

Posted by: Julie at October 5, 2005 8:31 PM

Tab redesigned its packaging a decade ago, opting for a cheerier, more cranberry can, which sparked a lot of speculation about whether they would change their flavor as well. As far as I can tell, Tab hasn't changed in thirty years, and neither has certain people's taste for Bacardi and Tab.

Posted by: ThirdMate at October 6, 2005 7:25 AM

Tab does have nutrasweet now in addition to saccharine, and I liked it better when it was all sacc, but yeah, it's pretty much the same and I don't want them to screw with it unless said screwing includes the removal of the nutrasweet and a return to all saccharine.

My lab report on Pimm's No. Cup made with New Fresca:

Findings: too sweet

Solution: return to making Pimm's No. 1 Cup with Limonata

Much like Coke Zero is too sweet, New Fresca is too sweet. Alas and alack, I have forsook Fresca!

Posted by: Patti M. at October 6, 2005 3:05 PM

The new Fresca is hyper-flavored. It's sweet in a non-sugary way.

WHere do you get your Limonata?

Posted by: James at October 6, 2005 7:03 PM

We get Limonata at Whole Foods. Sadly most supermarkets don't carry it.

Posted by: B.O.B. (bob) at October 7, 2005 8:03 AM

By the way Limonata mixes very well with blended scotches. Sort of like a whiskey sour.

Posted by: B.O.B. (bob) at October 7, 2005 8:04 AM

I'll try alomst anything once. But I just don't like to mix scotch and anything. Maybe Irish whikey and limonata?

Posted by: James at October 7, 2005 10:10 AM

Bourbon and Limonata would probably be very good together.

Posted by: Julie at October 7, 2005 11:22 AM

Famous Grouse and Limonata. Aaaaaahhhhhhh...

Posted by: Patti M. at October 7, 2005 11:23 AM

I'm not talking single malt but a good blend (Dewars 12 year is excellent). I like blended scotches with soda in the summer and with limonata. Nothing else goes well with scotch (My standard relaxation drink in the summer is eitehr scotch and soda or a Seagrams VO and sprite/gingerale.

Posted by: B.O.B. (bob) at October 7, 2005 12:01 PM

Limonataaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah

Ok, who needs a cocktail? I do!

Posted by: Patti M. at October 7, 2005 12:47 PM

Sorry. Gave it up as part of my new healthy lifestyle. Losing weight in a healthy way, so I'm not too sad about the departure of booze or soda.

Posted by: briwei at October 7, 2005 2:19 PM

Throw "giving up sex" in there for the trifecta and I'll be right there next to you. On the bridge. Ready to jump off. And end it all.

But, sincerely, good luck with that.

Posted by: James at October 7, 2005 2:38 PM

Yeah, the giving up on soda and liquor is actually intended to *enhance* the sex, so no plans to be on THAT bridge. But thanks just the same.

Posted by: briwei at October 7, 2005 3:12 PM

Hmmmmm. Didn't find the Playboy thing, but I did find this picture.

Posted by: briwei at October 7, 2005 3:16 PM

Actually, I asked to have that post deleted due to the connecting the dots that could be done.

That's me with my friend Chris when we worked together at a Boston law school. That picture is about 15 years old.

I first became aware of this picture last week wehn we were fiddling in Google at work. It's funny that it's the first picture to come up.

Posted by: Patti M. at October 7, 2005 3:20 PM

Note the snufalufagus on the computer monitor behind him.

I always thought was snufalupagus, until I just looked it up.

Posted by: Patti M. at October 7, 2005 3:24 PM

I thought it was Snufalupaguas as well. Must be all that mumbling through the costume.

Brian, if alcohol and soda were interfering with your sex life, you were using them wrong. And if that is the case, I can see why you would want to adopt extreme measures to rectify the situation.

But we're already dangerously close to TMI on this subject.

Posted by: James at October 7, 2005 3:49 PM

So you are saying that I shouldn't mention that I've taken up wearing Santa suits for the same reason? ;-)

Posted by: briwei at October 7, 2005 4:09 PM

You almost made me spit my egg nog on the screen.

Posted by: James at October 7, 2005 4:55 PM

Would I be out of line if I mentioned www.sodapopstop.com ? 48 varieties of cream soda, Julie. Just think of it.

Posted by: ThirdMate at October 8, 2005 12:54 PM

Out of line? For posting a place where I can order Cheerwine? Hell no you're not out of line!

When I was in FL, I had to order my Moxie from a place in Tampa... this place is more expensive, but now I'm encouraged to look for others.

Posted by: Julie at October 9, 2005 2:58 PM

Uhmm...is it just me or are other people really sad that they cannot find the older version of Fresca at stores...

Posted by: at October 14, 2005 3:32 PM

By "older" do you mean the regular flavor, the previous packaging, or the old saccharin version.?

I don't care much about the artwork on the can, but I'd love to have the option to buy the saccharin version.

They had the regular Fresca in the 2L bottle, but not in cans. All the shelf space for Fresca cans was being hogged up by the peach and cherry.

Posted by: Julie at October 14, 2005 4:08 PM

BTW, I think the previous can artwork was pretty ugly. Maybe not the ugliest in Fresca's history, though.

I had hoped to find a website depicting all the Fresca artwork (there is such a site for Tab), but couldn't find one.

Posted by: Julie at October 14, 2005 4:20 PM

Don't look at me to set up a Fresca history website. I get strange enough looks as it is with these soda pop posts.
