Change/Don't Change

I’ve been working to make some changes to this weblog, and I thought I would ask my readers (that’s you) a couple of quick questions. Feel free to ignore them.

  • Is there anything that you really don’t want me to change?
  • Is there anything that you do want me to change?

I can’t say that I will act on reader suggestions, but if you mention something that I haven’t thought of, it may help me to not overlook something. If you don’t want to post a comment, contact me via my contact information.

Feeds with full content are way more convenient for me to read.

You'll find one under the RSS 2.0 badge in the sidebar: http://www.drmomentum.com/aces/index.xml

I think Jim is just saying that he doesn't want me to get rid of that feed.

And I won't. I would be more likely to get rid of the "excerpts" feed. I consider excerpted feeds to be a punishment to regular readers, forcing users to visit the site just to read your content.

If my site were completely commercial and I needed to drive traffic here to put food on my family, then an excerpt feed might make some sense. But it is not, and annoying loyal readers who are interested in my content is a bizarre way to treat them.

(Plus, I think some feed generators can include ads, removing yet another reason to publish excerpts.)

Briefly, I used an offline reader with my laptop so I could take my favorite blog content on the road with me when I didn't have wireless access. It was the first time I actally fumed over excerpts, because a number of my favorite sites provided me with what amounted to teasers but I couldn't access the full content because my RSS reader hadn't been able to download the content.

So, I hear you, Jim.

BTW - I'll try to keep the feed(s) at the same addresses, but there may be some slight discomfort if and when I change blogging software.

Yes - please don't get rid of that feed.

BTW, I use the comments feed too. :-)

Bring back Name That Movie!!

Posted by: DG at April 30, 2006 10:50 AM

Yeah, NTM was fun. I didn't want to do it sporadically (because I wanted people to be able to know when to expect it). And I couldn't sustain doing it every week. I felt like it was taking time away from more creative stuff, but then I filled in the blank time with work. :(

Anyhow, when I started out, NTM was just three images and was much more difficult. I wonder if falling back to that would be any good. I got silly when I was having to reveal a movie every hour.

I love whatever you do with Aces Full. If it comes from you I will always enjoy it. AFA NTM goes, I'd be happy to provide you with the source for the automated NTM. It saves a lot of time when you don't have to be around to post the images. The hard part is of course, selecting the images though.

Oh and put me down as another reader who loves the RSS feed for comments.

A community blog with several contributors. Hmmm, now there's an idea for the long-term future.

Posted by: Mike L. at May 2, 2006 8:30 AM

Yeah - group blogs often get more popular and grow much bigger because they are targeted to an area of interest and the posts come more quickly and regularly (people take up the slack when other people are at a low blogging point).

I've often thought about startign another blog and asking some friends (bloggers and nonbloggers) to pitch in, but I have never been able to think of a crystalizing subject, or even group of subjects.

Still quite willing to consider the idea.
