If it’s Monday, It’s “Would You Rather” day. And I’m not talking about Dan Rather.
Today’s question. You must choose.
Would You Rather have a rather have a really cool job that pays so little you’re barely making a living, and you can’t tell anyone about how cool it is.
or
Would You Rather have a job that pays you well above what you need to maintain your lifestyle, and the work sucks, but everyone else thinks it’s a great job.
Posted by James at October 2, 2006 8:01 AMGreat job with little pay. But I'm got a professional Social Worker, so I subscribed to that position a long time ago when I declared my major for my BSW.
Posted by: mjfrombuffalo at October 2, 2006 8:11 AMHaving done a little of both, I think I would rather have the money, as long as there isn't a ton of OT that prevents me from enjoying my spare time.
Posted by: Julie at October 2, 2006 9:36 AMI've never had a really cool job so this one hits a bit too close to home. :-) A poor paying great job, I guess.
Posted by: Mike at October 2, 2006 9:58 AMYou know, I was thinking last night that I would love to work for Cartoon Network even if I had to have a roommate. (Of course I would also have to live in Atlanta which would be super-cool.) I don't care whether I could tell people or not. But maybe my answer isn't as simple as I thought.
Posted by: Julie at October 2, 2006 10:04 AMAs long as I can afford beer and M&Ms with my crappy pay and awesome job, I'll take it.
(Then steal stuff from it)
Posted by: Derek at October 2, 2006 10:26 AMcrappy pay with an awesome job, hands down.
Posted by: leslie at October 2, 2006 11:23 AMhaving made a similar choice last year I guess I gotta say crappy job, higher pay/more security. My thinking probably changed right around the time I bought a house.
Posted by: B.O.B. (bob) at October 2, 2006 11:55 AMHey -- I get zero pay and I have an awesome job. :-P Of course, that's not really fair, because James has a job that pays and happens to pay all the bills.
That is a tough question. Can I have a job that's good sometimes, lousy sometimes, and pays medium?
I'll take the great pay with the lousy job until I start to go insane, carefully saving every extra penny. Then I'll go for my dream job and use the savings as a cushion. Is that cheating?
Posted by: at October 2, 2006 11:58 AMThis is a hard question, I think. WHich is part of why I put it up there.
Obviously, with more responsibilities, more money becomes a little more important. But I'm wantign to lean toward that good job with crappy pay. You might live longer.
It's a toughie.
Posted by: James at October 2, 2006 12:20 PMHubby's got the crappy job with very good pay right now. He hates getting up in the morning and is miserable all week. I'm thinking it's not worth it.
Posted by: mjfrombuffalo at October 2, 2006 12:27 PMI'm looking forward to an awesome retirement ;) (I have a full pension and will have 30+ years in). Plus my job's not exactly crappy, I'm just kind of sick of it.
Posted by: B.O.B. (bob) at October 2, 2006 1:58 PMCrappy-ish job until he kids are grown. Then cool job. Although the "not tell anyone" part does limit it somewhat.
Posted by: briwei at October 2, 2006 3:14 PMChoice 2 describes my current situation to a T. Except for the money.
Posted by: DG at October 2, 2006 3:16 PMMy husband had a job he really liked with pay that didn't suck.
He got promoted. The pay was better, but he started to hate the job much of the time. Fortunately, he was able to retire.
Now he works for NOTHING most of the time. He loves what he's doing -- mostly volunteer stuff. He doesn't get paid, but he can afford that, because of the sucky job with good retirement benefits.
SO, sucky job with great retirement benefits is tempting, so you can have great job with crappy pay later. HOWEVER, he very nearly didn't survive bypass surgery 7 years ago, so there's definitely a risk you might not survive the sucky job with great pay.
When I told a former Commuter Rail friend I had finally landed a good job (the one I have now) he was very happy for me and said "You've had a lot of dippy jobs," and he was right.
I've had a string of poor-paying jobs until I landed the one I now have. Some have been great, though none have been truly awsome. Some were interesting but came with horrid bosses.
To the question:
Awesome job but poor pay does not pay the bills, which causes anxiety and sometimes anger at the situation one is "stuck" in.
Excellent pay for a crappy job could last only so long before one burns out and has to find a different job.
I can't make a choice based on the variables in this question, and I think the "you can’t tell anyone about how cool it is" part doesn't really fit.
Posted by: Patti M. at October 3, 2006 2:22 PMI used to have the cool job that paid low ... but I was in school and living with my mom so I could get away with it.
Now I have the job that pays well but is crappy work, that everybody thinks is a great gig. Sometimes I really miss the old days, but if I had a low-paying job now, no matter how cool, I'd spoil things by worrying myself to death, because I have people to support now.
May I please peek behind Door #3?
Posted by: pam at October 5, 2006 12:16 PMCool job. I've been in the job with pay that everyone thinks is cool. You can convince yourself for, I dunno, a year, maybe two. And you never get that time back.
Posted by: George at October 5, 2006 4:03 PM"I've been in the job with pay that everyone thinks is cool."
I've been there. I worked for Harvard University, and people always thought two things:
1. You must be paid really well. HA ha ha ha ha! Maybe they thought high tuition=great pay. Not so much.
2. Tuition is free, right? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.............
