Would You Rather: Spinning Wheels

Tuesday is “on a Monday schedule” here at the university, because of Columbus Day (which I hope you all enjoyed). So “Would You Rather” is happenin’ today instead of yesterday. Whee!

This “Would You Rather” is work-related.

Would You Rather

  • Spend all day in a boring meeting, during which you must seem interested
  • Spend all day doing semi-pointless busywork

Choose wisely!

I choose: "Spend all day doing semi-pointless busywork
"

Pretending to be interested in the topic at hand during a long and boring meeting requires effort--I know from much experience.

Busywork. Even if it's *completely* pointless.

If you had thrown in a Britney Spears clause, or a dentist bib, that might complicate matters, but as you describe the options, I'd go with pointless busywork, which can be zenlike and meditative.

I remember many long days, early in my career, when my entire day's work was scotch-taping new flowcharts into our old manuals and then taking them to the copier lady.

I spent those days imagining the future and yearning for greater challenges. Now I feel nostalgic about those days, when I was grossly overpaid to waste office supplies and dream.

Busywork... The time seems to go by much more quickly. Then I could get home to my family :)

...or go for a beer...

Busywork -- absolutely. I think we all like having our brains to ourselves!

No question. Biz-E-Werk. No way could I feign interest for a whole day. I'd end up in trouble for some mischief or other.

I guess we all hate meetings.

This reminds me of my favorite "Demotivator" poster:

"Meetings. None Of Us Is As Dumb As All Of Us."

That Demotivator poster hangs proudly in the office of a colleague.

Meeting, you can bring a laptop, pretend to take notes and every so often look perplexed and say "Um, no, forget it, it's not that important."

Definitely busywork. I can't keep my eyes open when I'm bored silly for long periods of times. And when they are open I'm plagued with streams of what my sister and I used to call "tired tears". I cannot hide boredom.
