My First President-elect Obama Criticism

If you stayed up to see Obama speak, you saw a sober speech delivered to an excited but rapt audience. And he referred to his family:

And I would not be standing here tonight without the unyielding support of my best friend for the last 16 years the rock of our family, the love of my life, the nation's next first lady Michelle Obama.

Sasha and Malia I love you both more than you can imagine. And you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the new White House.

I have to admit that it was wonderful to see the Obama family on stage together; Barack and Michelle and their two young daughters superficially remind me of my own family.

But, President-elect Obama, my daughters heard about your speech, and now they want a puppy. So, thanks for nothing!

There's a loose terrier running around the Navy Yard this morning. NPS says they're going to call the SPCA. I can stop them and scoop the little guy up for ya...

Tell them they can have a puppy once you've been elected president.

LOL! Get one that doesn't pee every time it gets nervous... one with a complacent disposition. Puppies are wonderful--I remember very clearly the day we brought Tina home.

I'll get a puppy when I am elected president. What B.O.B. said.

I really enjoyed that moment in last night's speech. This country is going to fall in love with that family.

I made the same comment to my kids this morning. When I'm elected President, you can have a puppy.

Josh is ready to start campaigning.

When you are the President, you can have staffers clean up after the puppy and take it out in the cold.

I like puppies. I particularly like them when they belong to other people, who get the task of cleaning up after them. Cats are so much easier.

But, heck, Obama's kids deserve a puppy (and a puppy nanny).

My kids have access to puppies, which is fine for now.

Puppy nanny, eh? I wonder if the skills are easily transferred to doggie elder care. If so, please send this dog minder my way.

Polly was already a year old and very well housebroken when I got her. I think I'd get another pound dog rather than a puppy.

Puppies are cute, but not cute enough to make me feel better about peepee carpets and constant chewing.

Pets are an important part of the nuclear American family. The cornerstone of traditional western family units.

Why do you hate America?

Chuck - A friend and I have formulated a theory. People who choose not to have pets are less human (have smaller hearts) than people who choose to have pets. [People with allergies can't help themselves.]

Posted by: Kitten Herder at November 5, 2008 8:12 PM

Wow. That's pretty damn harsh.

Posted by: Julie at November 5, 2008 10:11 PM

I'll go out on a limb here and say that was *probably* a joke... I know my nuclear family comment was certainly a joke.

Posted by: Chuck S. at November 5, 2008 10:44 PM

Awkward!

Posted by: James at November 5, 2008 11:00 PM

Wait a minute... the first lady is going to be BLACK? Why didn't anybody tell me that before I voted???

Posted by: Maggie at November 6, 2008 10:54 AM

I wonder if she'll also be the tallest First Lady in history.

And how she would look in a pillbox hat.

Posted by: Julie at November 6, 2008 11:25 AM

OMG, she would look H-O-T in an ensemble that featured a pillbox hat!

Posted by: Patti M. at November 6, 2008 3:54 PM

Well, after some quick Googling, I see Carla Bruni has beaten her to it. I don't know if it's cool for our First Lady to wear a pillbox hat if the one in France is already doing that. But I'm pretty sure MB could kick Bruni's ass if necessary.

Until then, I think it would be funny if Michelle Obama and Laura Bush were to wear matching outfits at every event.

(I think I might still be giddy from Tuesday night.)

Posted by: Julie at November 6, 2008 4:29 PM

Oh, no no no. Forget about Carla Bruni. Jackie Kennedy was wearing the pillbox hat before Carla Bruni was even born. In fact, it was Jackie I pictured immediately when I read you post.

In fact, I'd like to see Michelle O. dressed in the style of Jackie.

Wow. Dig this story I just found:

Is Michelle Obama the new Jackie O?

I know - JK is the reason I originally wanted to put MO in a pillbox hat. But then I started image-Googling to find out if MO had already worn such a thing, or if Laura Bush had, and that's when I found out that Carla had totally usurped it and it's her "thing" now. Grrr.

So now I need Michelle Obama to pick out an even better hat.
